In order for churches to be alive, the members must be fruitful and active. God’s life and power must be flowing through each member. The Bible tells us clearly what the church should really be:
The church like a body has many parts. “Now you are the body of Christ and each one of you is a part of it.” (I Cor. 12:27) The Bible tells us that those who have put their faith in Jesus and are actively following Him are part of His body, fully functioning and growing and constantly being fruitful. The task of the church is to be the representative of Jesus Christ here on earth so that many people can know Him as well. We have a responsibility to learn and be taught from God’s Word. This is the only way we can begin and continue to exercise obedience and holiness in daily living. We can participate in many things that God does through the church. If you consider yourself to be a part of the church then you will take up your responsibilities as part of the body.
The members of the church like branches on a vine must be fruitful. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in Him, He will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” “This is to the Father’s glory that you bear much fruit. Showing yourselves to be my disciples.” (John 15:5 & 8) Fruitfulness is the sign of being alive. Trees must have fruits in order for it to be seen as alive and productive. Christian faith must be characterized by fruitfulness. The church must therefore be fruitful; meaning its members must constantly be showing the evidence of God’s work in their lives. God’s work is not only to bless us with material things and to protect us from danger and sickness. His work is in changing our hearts and lives to pattern us after the image of His Son Jesus Christ. Only when God is operating in our lives that we can become useful and fruitful in His kingdom.
Fruitfulness requires some effort. A living relationship with Jesus Christ calls for work and investment of time on our part.
We need to be responsible parts of the body of Christ. God has a wonderful plan and purpose for each one of us. Would you care to find that out and allow God to produce His fruits in you? Are you doing your responsibilities in order to grow? Is God already using you in some way for His purpose?
